02.1.15
Artist: Kyo (Dir en grey)
Title: 304goushitsu, Shita to Yoru (Room 304, Tongue and Night)
Words: Kyo
Music: Kyo

tears streaming down my smiling face, taking a knife to my wrists
a voice I believed, the lies laugh, addicted to being the victim *1

crying watching the red liquid trail down the veins
Unable to even take my own life, addicted to being the victim

dyeing the white room red, My cut, go deeper and deeper and deeper

bound by the crowds of people, I feel lonely, unable to do anything
Tommorow may never come again, night of my 16th Year
Night is scary, night is cold,
give myself over to the movements of the night. *2
Tomorrow may never come again, Spring of my 16th Year

the victim has no tongue. *3

there's no light, shut in on that morning of my 12th year.
a kitten on the rare side, for me, a vegetarian type. *4

Father, Mother I dyed them red, My cut, grow deeper and deeper and deeper.

bound by the crowds of people, I feel lonely, unable to do anything
Tommorow may never come again, night of my 16th Year
Night is scary, night is cold, give myself over to the movements of the night.
Tomorrow may never come again, Spring of my 16th Year
I make myself quiet, I close my eyes, and envision the faces of my Mother and Father
no matter how much I smile, or cry I can't go back.
I say goodbye to the cold night my tears dry out, I cut my wrist
Tommorow may never come again, the Spring of my 16th year.

Translator's Notes: I have a pretty good idea of what this song is getting at with its images.

* 1 - My favorite line is "byo teki higaisha" which we translated as 'addicted to playing the victim'. In this case "byo teki" is being used to describe someone who over does something, for instance someone who cleans too much, or plays the slots too much. They would be called "byo teki".

* 2 - Kyo uses the word "yoi oboreteyuku" but he changes the yoi (which would mean drunk) for yo which means night. This is not a proper usage of the kanji but by using it he highlights the word night which he seems to be emphasizing. Our interpretation of this line is that kyo as a 16 year old is wandering this cold empty night and feeling completely cut off from the world and euphoric. The "yoru no mure" we decided to translate as movements of the night, because its a very creepy image, of a 16 year old sort of disappearing into this vague black mass of motion.

* 3 - The line "the victim has no tongue" seems a bit odd. It could literally mean like a detective is saying "the victim has no tongue" or it could be a poetic term meaning something along the lines of "deadmen tell no tales". It's up to interpretation.

* 4 - Isn't the image of feeding a vegetarian boy, a cat on the rare side intentionally cruel? I think that's the point of those lines.
