L'Arc~en~Ciel: Ibara no Namida
04.07.01
Artist: L'Arc~en~Ciel Title: Ibara no Namida (Tears of Brambles) Words: Hyde Music: Hyde The oath deep in my heart floated to the dampened and seemingly hopeless sky. every word we exchange, like a people of foreign lands these castle walls that have gravely stood against time tower over us. Ah lead my faithful soul to eternity Am I having a good time in vain while heaven flutters down ? before everything prostrates itself. even if this blood drawn by briars dries out, hold my heart for you. The rain continues to fall if you can rejuvenate your desires and my love will wake up from the illusion its buried in. ah the master who steals even my devoted prayer. chorus Bound in the flames I raise my voice. don't kill that distorted love. even if this burning body is reduced to ash, if they're not too dirty at that time bring them with you and then solftly hold them. Translated By: Brian Stewart & Takako Sakuma Translator's Notes: Ahh we struggled over this one. The line "...gravely stood against time..." was a real hard one to get across. The meaning is what we translated it as, but its a little more visual than just that. The original line says "the castle walls that were cut heavilly by time" but in English it sounds misleading. In Japanese it means that the castle walls have lasted a long time and still remain imposing after all these increments of time have passed. The line about "blood drawn by briar's drying out" means in Japanese "losing all your blood to the briar's and dying because of it". I think we did ok with the Enlgish though. The last image is very strong, in that hyde begs ot be held after he's been reduced to a pile of ashes. He demands his beloved's devotion in a way. We want to explain to other students of the language that while "itazura" means mischief or teasing, if written as "itazura ni" it has a meaning closer to "in vain" or "without meaning or importance". He's kind of saying, "Am I just wasting my time enjoying the fall of heaven in a time right before everything is going to beg for forgiveness ?" Got it ? Good.
